A country club can absolutely request your social security number and make it a requirement for membership. A country club, as a private entity, may generally set just about any requirement for entry, any term and condition that it likes. Once they have your social security number, having requested it, they will be under certain obligations to safeguard it, not disclose it, etc.--violation of those obligations can result ini them incurring liability. This means it's questionable whether they *should* ask for the number and set themselves up for this--but they are allowed to do so, and if you don't want to provide it, you should look for a different club, the same way you would if you disagreed strenuously with any of their policies.
