Definitely, the company can do this, UNLESS there is a written employment or union/collective bargaining contract which prohibits termination for this reason, or which requires some specific process or procedure for termination which was no complied with. In the absence of contractual restrictions on termination, an employee may be terminated for any reason, including starting a petition about another employee. (Only contracts protect against termination; when there is no contractual limitation on termination, the employer may terminate.) If there is a contract, then the employee can only be terminated in accordance with it.
