In CA, consumers do not have to have training and no certificate is required to purchase or posses pepper spray and/or mace. Additionally, certain persons are prohibited from possessing these items. They are:

  • Minors under the age of 16
  • Convicted felons
  • Individuals convicted of narcotic/drug addiction
  • Individuals convicted of assault
  • Individuals convicted of misusing pepper spray

So, as long as you are 16 (and none of the other above apply to you) it is legal for you to possess either mace or pepper spray, with or without your paret's permission.
