If as a minor I was involved in an auto accident and received a settlement, can I still collect my settlement now that I’m over 21?

I am trying to collect this settlement that I was entitled and need to know what steps I have to take to get this money. The lawyer that handled my case, tells me that he does not keep records beyond 7 years. That I would need to come back with documentation. Unfortunately, I do not have documents. Please tell me what I need to do to collect this money. Do I go to the Police Department for a report and the Courts? I need to start somewhere.

Most likely the lawyer that handled your case where there was a settlement under a minor's compromise and a court order approving it would be able to provide you with the case number for the county and state where the lawsuit on your behalf was filed.

Once received, go down to the county court house and pull the court file from archives. Upon review of the file you should see where the settlement amount on your behalf was placed and who was the custodian. Most likely the custodian for this account was one of your parents or your legal cusodian at the time. Once that person's identity is found, you can then ask him or her where the account is located.
