Arizona workers’ compensation laws mandate that employers carry workers’ compensation insurance to provide for employees who are injured on the job or who develop occupational illnesses and cannot work.

Injuries Caused by Workplace Accidents
Accidents can happen at work, and when employees are injured, an employer’s workers’ compensation insurance will cover the cost of an employee’s recovery. Common on-the-job accidents include falling, tripping, or injury by a machine accident. However, if a worker is injured because he is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or because his injuries are self-inflicted, he may not be covered by his employer’s workers’ compensation insurance policy.
Occupational conditions are covered under Arizona workers’ compensation laws when an employee’s job duties or the unsafe conditions to which he is exposed at his place of employment cause an illness.
Benefits will be paid to the dependents of a worker who dies from his occupational illness or injury.
Arizona Workers’ Compensation Benefits
If an employee is injured or becomes ill at work, his medical treatment for the work-related condition, including physician’s appointments and hospital bills, will be paid for by his employer’s workers’ compensation insurance. Your employer’s insurance will reimburse you for your travel time and the amount of wages you lose going to and from medical appointments. Additionally, in the unfortunate event that a worker dies because of his work-connected illness or injury, his surviving dependents will be eligible to receive a varying amount of death benefits to compensate for his loss of earning capacity, as well as funeral expenses up to $5,000.
Income replacement benefits are also possible in Arizona depending on the type and severity of the worker’s injury or illness. The four types of income replacement benefits available are:
1) Temporary Total Disability Benefits (TTD): An employee cannot work temporarily because he is recovering from his illness or injury. TTD benefits are generally paid each month at 2/3 of the worker’s average monthly wage.
2) Temporary Partial Disability Benefits (TPD): When an employee’s on-the-job injury prevents him from doing his old job while he recovers, but he can do some work at reduced wages or for reduced hours. During this period he will get 2/3 of the difference between the employee’s monthly wages prior to the injury and those following the injury.
3) Permanent Total Disability Benefits (PTD): PTD will pay 3/4 of the employee’s average monthly wage to an employee whose injury or illness is so severe that he will never be able to work again.
4) Permanent Partial Disability Benefits (PPD): The worker’s injury makes it impossible for him to work at his old job because it permanently affects him, but he is still able to perform work to some extent. If this is the case, the worker will receive half of his average monthly wage each month.
