All three companies write homeowners, fire and earthquake coverages, primarily to preferred risks. The group of companies traces its origins to 2 county mutual fire insurance companies incorporated in California in the 1940s. The group writes homeowners (90% of 2005 premium), dwelling fire (2.7%), allied lines (2.5%) and earthquake (4.6%). California accounts for 80.3% of premium, Arizona 12.1%, Nevada 5.2%, Colorado 2.4%, Utah 0.1% and New Mexico less than 0.1%. The target market for new business is small to medium sized homes, particularly newly constructed homes or homes that are relatively new and located in areas of low earthquake risk. Business is developed through about 10 large agencies owned or affiliated with builders of new homes or mortgage lenders. This Company is fraudulent and very dishonest. They run every type of scam there is to avoid paying you especially if you have an expensive home with nice furnishings. They probably pay on small claims but if you have a large home with nice expensive furnishings don’t expect to get paid in full for your claim they will scam you and rip you off. Be prepared to have a pocket full of money and wait years for your claim to be settled because they won’t advance you your policy limits on your additional living expenses or anything else you paid for in your policy. You will be put out on the street without the additional living expenses that you paid for! Do not talk with them on the phone either they twist and falsify every conversation and then follow it up with a lying letter that’s verbage is completely different from what you stated. Do everything and I do mean everything in writing or they will try to set you up not to pay you. You will not believe the lies and deceit that they pull out of their hats to avoid paying a claim. If anyone is insured with this Company and have a nice home with nice furnishings I truly urge you to change Company’s before you have a claim because they will low ball you to death and your claim will never be paid in full! I wish someone could have warned me. They will never offer you a fraction of what your items are worth and will not provide mitigation services until they are satisfied that the claim is a covered claim, and when that is done they drag their foot and you sustain further damage to your home etc. from their delays and deceit. Please, please pick ANY other Company! I guess that’s why they have so many different names, check their letter head and envelopes out….their Western Mutual Insurance, Residence Mutual Insurance etc………PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND CHECK THIS COMPANY OUT. I CARED ENOUGH TO WARN OTHERS SO THEY WON’T HAVE TO EXPERIENCE WHAT WE DID.

I have been insured with Western Mutual for over 20 years. After the Northridge earthquake, they were the one of the few companies that paid off all losses (including my home). Western Mutual/Residence Mutual is highly rated by the CA Dept of Insurance.

Before I joined Western Mutual, I did research on the California dept of Insurance site, Western Mutual had no complaints for 3+ years, they just offer great service and low rates. Not sure where the comments listed come from but I highly recommend them for homeowners insurance.

Western Mutual appears to offer low rates on homeowners insurance by underinsuring homes. In my case, the insured value they claimed would replace the home was only 60% of what ohter insurers claimed was necessary. I am concerned this company will not be able to honor its policies.

This company is horrible. They dropped the ball on payout. They took forever to go over my claim. They gave me a non renewal and left my claim open so I cant get insurance on my home!!!!!!!

Filed a claim for slab leak under my house. Western Mutual denied claim and proceeded to cancel my policy because a claim was filed. Mind you, they never paid a dime toward the claim. Have been a customer for 27 years.

Decent rates if you qualify for their coverage. I referred someone who lived near brush they could not get coverage but I did.

This company does not seem to cover anything in claims although after 2 claims in 5 years that they claimed the insurance did not cover so paid nothing are cancelling my policy. I am not sure what my premiums were for I guess to get them richer.

The only reason this company got a A rating is because they are only insuring whom they think will not file a claim for them coz if you do they will cancel it as you observe on most comments here. Stay away from this company and don’t say that I am not warning you. Yes they can be cheaper but you will not get anything from them by the time you will file a claim. This is a plain scam if you think about it.

It’s a nightmare working with this company We had a water leak January 2013 and here it is 4 months later and we still don’t have our kitchen completedand now we get a cancellation notice Our claims person was more concerned about the contractor he recommends and works with. I have to say after I complained I was assigned a new adjuster who is very nice but unless we replumb our whole house we’re cancelled never had a claim in 19 years

I have insured my homes with Western Mutual for over 20 years. I have found the premiums to be very competitive for similar coverage compared to quotes from other carriers. The customer service department has been great and very helpful as I have moved and refinanced numerous times over the years and I really like their online customer service center.

Been with them 15 years. Don’t plan on seeing a real person phone calls not returned. They prefer to do business by email/online. Once they tell you they are through with you that’s it – no returned calls no returned email nothing. 15 years and 10’s of thousands of dollars to them doesn’t even get you the time of day let alone an explanation of why your cancelled or denied. As others have said – you get what you pay for. Make sure you know WHAT is insured WHAT the limits are for EVERY item or you may find yourself dramatically under-insured.

This insurance has caused us stress and hardship. don’t think western mutual home insurance will come safe the day. you will have to go through hell to get this insurance to spilt up money to pay for your lost or stolen items. western mutual home insurance need to go out of business you are just taking people money and when they need you your not available and cant pay.

Been with this company for 15 years – had a slab leak – claim process was nightmare – slow-pace and stressful – agent barely responsive – that’s what you get in return for years of on-time premium payment. They suck Run away
