Yes, you can request a denial letter with all the reason.  At the same time, have your son file a complaint with your Washington’s Department of Insurance (DOI) stating in his written complaint that his claim was denied for undisclosed reason with the adjuster commenting that text message and “other reason” were part of the denial.  Mention the adjuster’s name and the insurance company, claim number and any other detail information you can provide the DOI. Hopefully, they will look into the reasons themselves and weigh in on the fairness of this denial.  Any claim denial should be in writing.  Therefore you request is not unreasonable.  Contacting the DOI may get you results quicker and in the meantime, get your states regulatory agency looking into this claim.
