Insurance Question from Cheyenne, WY

Asked on 06/30/2010

My mother, who lived in another state, recently has passed away. Is there a process to search if she had a life or burial insurance policy? We have found her will and there is no mention of insurance coverage. However, when our father died there was a policy in place. We believe that they had purchased policies at the same time.

First, I would check with the attorney ( if there is one ), or whoever helped her put the will together. Perhaps they can help you search.

Second, if that doesn’t pan out, you are likely in for quite a task.  There are several thousand insurance companies out there, and you will need to contact them.  Since you already know the information from your father’s policy, I’d start with them.

You’ll need to provide them with the following information, for starters:

1)  Name and address that would have been on record

2)  SSN of the deceased

Don’t forget maiden names and previous addresses…  they could come in handy if your mother had this policy before she was married.

As far as a list of insurance companies to contact, you would need to call your state department of insurance and get a list of who all is/was licensed to sell life insurance in your state over the time you beleive the policy was written, up until the date of death.  Be prepared, there could be hundreds of them to call.  A good place to start would be the most popular 100 companies in your state, since they typically sell the vast majority of policies.

Good luck…  you may have a monumental task in front of you.  I hope you can find that which you are searching.
