Insurance Question from Streetsboro, OH

Asked on 07/24/2010

My fiancee was pulled over at the beginning of March in a company vehicle. He was ticketed for speeding (15 over), no seatbelt, non-commercial plates on a commercial vehicle & lack of proof of insurance. At the time he did not have insurance due the to fact that he did not have a vehicle registered to him & was not required to carry an SR-22. In court they dropped the plate & insurance charges since it was not his vehicle & the seatbelt charge because there was no proof. At the end of June a notice was mailed from the BMV stating his license wld be suspended due to failure to show proof of insurance. It was mailed to an old address & he didnt recieve it until after the suspension date. How can he prove insurance on a vehicle thats not his?

You don’t say if the vehicle being driven actually had insurance or not.  If the car was insured, but there was no proof in the car your fiance he should be able to get a copy of the insurance card and contact the BMV with the proof.  Since he did not own a car it is unlikely he would be required to have insurance.  However, insurance is available for drivers who do not own cars.  It is called non owned automobile insurance and it is available from most insurance companies.

Your fiance needs to speak to someone at the BMV to confirm what he needs to provide to get his license reinstated.  If the car was not insured, he could still be held responsible for driving a car that was not insured or registered properly.
