Keep in mind that these are just averages, and the actual amount you pay depends on a variety of factors. The way insurance companies calculate your rates is by looking at different demographics. These include your age, gender, location, what type of car you drive, your credit score, and even your marital status.

While it usually has higher rates, MetLife offers affordable coverage for drivers with bad credit scores or who need high-risk coverage.

MetLife Auto Insurance Rates vs. the Competition

When you compare rates, you’ll find that MetLife is not the cheapest option on the market. While it excels in areas like customer service, MetLife isn’t the first choice for drivers on a budget. For example, you can read our Progressive auto insurance review to see how much lower rates could be.

These price differences are why insurance experts recommend comparing MetLife quotes with other companies before you sign up for a policy. If you skip this vital step, you’ll likely overpay for your insurance.

Comparing MetLife car insurance costs with other quotes is simple. You can request a personalized quote from each company you’re considering by filling out the form on each website. MetLife Auto Insurance Coverage Options

Whether you want the bare minimum amount of insurance your state requires or a full coverage auto insurance policy, there are plenty of MetLife car insurance options for you.

Full coverage definition card: MetLife auto insurance review

Like most major insurance companies, MetLife offers all the basic types of car insurance. These include:

  • Liability: Split into bodily injury and property damage, liability insurance covers your financial responsibility to others after an at-fault accident.
  • Collision: You’ll need collision insurance if you want your policy to cover your car repairs after an accident. Collision insurance covers you even if you caused the accident.
  • Comprehensive: For all of life’s unexpected events, there’s comprehensive insurance. Comprehensive covers damage from things like weather, fires, and theft.
  • Personal Injury Protection/MedPay: Personal injury protection (PIP) coverage and MedPay cover health care expenses for you and your passengers after a collision.
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: While nearly every state requires coverage, it doesn’t mean everyone follows the law. Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage protects you against drivers with inadequate coverage.

The actual amount of coverage you need depends on your driving situation. However, basic policies are usually made up of some combination of the coverages listed above.

MetLife Auto Insurance Add-Ons

Looking to customize your insurance policy? MetLife offers a variety of add-ons so you can get the exact policy you want. When you shop at MetLife, you can add the following coverage to your policy:

  • Gap Coverage: For drivers who need car insurance on a leased or financed car, you may end up owing more money than your vehicle is worth. Gap insurance pays the difference on an underwater loan.
  • Rental Car Reimbursement: If your vehicle is stuck at the mechanic shop after a covered incident, MetLife will cover the cost of your rental car.
  • Roadside Assistance: MetLife will come to the rescue when you’re stranded with a flat tire, empty gas tank, dead battery, or you need a tow.

Keep in mind that adding coverage will increase your rates. It’s never a bad idea to add more coverage, but you should only purchase what you think you might need.

MetLife representatives can help you determine if an add-on is worth including in your policy and when you should cancel part of your coverage. For example, a representative will know the best time to end gap coverage in your policy.

Daniel Walker Licensed Insurance Agent

MetLife has a reputation for excellence in insurance, but auto policies aren’t the main type of policy it sells. Compared to other auto insurance providers, MetLife doesn’t have a long list of add-ons. If policy customization is important to you, you may want to look elsewhere.

MetLife Auto Insurance Discounts

Auto insurance can be expensive, but MetLife offers a variety of ways to get low-cost car insurance with driver discounts. If you’re interested in a MetLife policy, you may qualify for the following discounts.

MetLife Auto Insurance Customer Reviews

Before MetLife sold its car and homeowners insurance policies to Farmers, it had a reputation for being more expensive than average auto insurance rates by age and gender, but offered excellent service. Today, drivers are less likely to risk MetLife’s higher rates for Farmers service. Consider this Reddit user’s questions about whether MetLife’s high rates are worth it.

Should I switch from MetLife to Progressive?
byu/billygreen23 inInsurance

As you can see, most Reddit users agree that MetLife’s overall rates are just too high to justify the cost. The higher costs are one of the most common MetLife complaints. However, as another Reddit user points out, you get what you pay for — MetLife auto insurance costs might be worth it.

Aside from the higher rates, MetLife customers are generally happy with this provider’s customer service and how long it takes to file a claim.

As for its social impact, many customers appreciate that MetLife supports charitable causes in the local communities it serves.

On top of strong third-party ratings, MetLife also has a long history in the insurance industry. Founded in 1868, MetLife’s nearly 160 years of insurance sales means this company knows what it’s doing. In fact, the one real hold-up many drivers have about MetLife is the price. If you want to stop overpaying for car and home insurance, MetLife probably isn’t the right choice.

MetLife Pros and Cons

While you shouldn’t make a quick decision about a car insurance company, looking at the pros and cons of a provider is an easy way to rule one out. When you get a MetLife auto insurance quote, you’ll have access to the following advantages:

  • Excellent Customer Service: MetLife has a reputation for providing a superior customer service experience.
  • Online Tools: It’s easy to manage your MetLife auto insurance policy through Farmers’ website and mobile app. These are also excellent resources if you need to learn how to file a car accident claim with MetLife.
  • Insurance Excellence: While it offers solid auto insurance through Farmers, MetLife is best known for its life insurance. If you want to bundle your policies, MetLife is a great option.

Like all other insurance providers, MetLife is not without its weaknesses. Before signing up for MetLife auto insurance through Farmers, you should watch out for the following disadvantages:

  • Higher Premiums: MetLife insurance quotes are typically higher than the national average.
  • No Longer Sold by MetLife: Since 2021, MetLife redirects its customers interested in auto insurance to Farmers.

MetLife certainly isn’t the best option for drivers looking for the cheapest coverage possible. However, if you want superior service and don’t mind paying more for it, MetLife auto insurance is a great choice.

MetLife Auto has given my wife nothing but [REDACTED WORD]. She worked for [REDACTED NAME] and it came out of her paycheck but once she left [REDACTED NAME] it became [REDACTED WORD]. I would like to talk about our experience from November through March 5th. In November we made a payment over the phone. We were told by the representative that is covers the full months of December and January. We were also told we wouldn’t have to pay until February. In January we receive a notice that our policy is going to be canceled due to no payment. We were very confused since we were told we won’t have to pay until February. Also, the amount owed was very confusing because based the yearly premium divided by 12 it was not the amount they said we owed. We call MetLife and get a female representative. We asked simple questions; “why do we owe if we were told something different in November?” No answer for this one. Just a confused worker. Next question “Why does it say we owe over $300 if our yearly premium divided by 12 is $140?” Representative hangs up on us. Rather then find out answers all they do at MetLife is hang up. Call the next day, Finally we get an intelligent agent. He was great. He explained that MetLife charges 9 times a year and not 12 hence the amount being off to us. Explained to us that the first agent was wrong in November and you have to pay in advanced for February/March and have to make that payment in January. Asked us if we would like to do monthly auto payments instead of paying this weird amount 9 times a year. We said yes, this makes perfect sense. Auto payments and don’t have to deal with these terrible MetLife auto agents. Gives us clear instructions. “Call February 1st, make payment over phone of $135 and email the paperwork for auto payment once you pay”. We call February 1st, make the payment. We email paperwork and received a text that auto payment is complete and will start March 1st. Here comes today March 5th. We check out bank account no payment has been taken out. We look online and see our policy is canceled. At this moment I’m thinking here is my 22 week pregnant wife driving without insurance and no one even notified us. I’m very angry as you can imagine. We call 4 times today, the first agent has no answers, takes our number and says a supervisor will call us. Do these agents know anything? Can they look into an issue themselves and get an answer? Guess what I’m not waiting now. I tell my wife I’m calling. Next agent I call and I didn’t even give her a chance to speak said things I shouldn’t of but as you can imagine finding out your pregnant wife is not covered with car insurance without notification to fix an issue is very infuriating. Says she’s going to transfer me to a supervisor. Guess what? Hangs up instead. Why is everything (I need a supervisor or hanging up)with this company? I call back, speak more politely. She informs me that the insurance policy was canceled on February 1st, the same day we called and made the payment! We got a text after February 1st saying we are enrolled in autopay. As you can imagine we have no idea our policy is canceled especially since payment was accepted on February 1st and we got a text afterwards saying we are enrolled in auto pay. Autopay for what? You canceled our policy February 1st. She says she’s going to transfer me to a supervisor, here we go again I’m thinking. Another incompetent MetLife auto agent that needs supervision. He explained to us that the person in February 1st messed up and we would of been covered if something happened. They never fixed the cancelation notice by accident. He tried to twist it on us “if you would of paid the $320 in January this would of never been an issue, we did you the favor” If someone in November is telling us we are paid for December and January; then get a $320 bill in January we aren’t going to pay it blindly. If your team was able to tell us why we had to pay the first time we called it would of never been an issue. Then the next guy offered us automatically monthly payments so of course we going to accept that over being billed random amounts with no explanations! He then offered to reinstate us and charge us the amount for March 1st, we went elsewhere. Stay again from MetLife Auto!
