Insurance Question from Seneca, SC

Asked on 05/26/2011

Is there an insurance advocate to assist with a stolen vehicle and it’s contents? We have one company for both home and auto. While on vacation in Florida our vehicle was stolen. Are there advocates that assoist with this type of loss and if so does the isurance company cover the cost. Since we we're traveling for over a month's time we had many items that will fall under our home owner's policy as well. We have the same insurance company for both losses. However, we have been informed that many of the add ons to the vehicle will not be covered, leaving us with several thousand dollars in losses. Because of the scope of this loss we feel we need assistance in this matter.

Most states have businesses who assist claimants in the process of a claim.  These are not free, and the insurance company does not pay for them.  However, sometimes they can work the costs into the claim payment.

As far as the add ons you had to your car, each insurance company handles them differently.  Since I don’t know what the add ons are, it is difficult to narrow down what might be covered.  However, some insurance companies need to know of the customization before a loss, and require a special endorsement on the auto policy before they will cover them.  Some other companies only require proof of the items, such as receipts for the cost of the item and installation.

Auto insurance covers only the items that are a part of the auto.  Personal property in the car would come under the homeowner policy and both would be subject to separate deductibles.  You need to talk to the adjuster to help you determine which is covered by what policy.  In addition, your agent should be able to help you work through the paperwork involved.
