If you are currently listed as a driver on your parent’s insurance policy and have a chargeable accident, then there is a surcharge on their insurance policy for your accident. If there was no injury in the accident the surcharge will be lower than if there was bodily injury. If you get your own car and get a separate insurance policy the surcharge for the accident will move over to your insurance policy and come off of your parents policy. Considering your age and already having an at fault accident, your rates could be substantially higher, since you will not be eligible for the multi car discount that your parents are probably receiving.Shop around for insurance, but consider the company that your parents are using since they will have a history with you and you may be eligible for some discounts from your parents.Even though you will be removed as a listed driver on your parents policy, you will still be able to drive their car.
