Insurance Question from Santa Rosa, CA

Asked on 02/07/2011

I have been traveling out of the country for 3 months and while out of country house I was renting was sold at auction. I was noticed of nothing. My My neighbor emailed me and told me there was a sheriffs notice posted on house telling me I had to vacate in 14 days and al locks were changed with al of my belongings inside. I am still in Europe as my daughter is going to school and for a Masters program and I wanted to be here until she is settled and I feel comfortable enough to leave her alone. Now I am being threatened that all my belongings will be auctioned off and they have given me a 2 day time period to move out of a 3700 sq. ft. house with 5 bedroomsMy doors are locked. Does my Geico Renters policy cover any of my costs for emer

Answer given on February 19, 2011

Unfortunately, your renters policy with Geico is not going to help you with costs for emergency housing and storage of your belongings.  The renters policy covers you for specified losses and eviction and civil authority are not part of the list of covered perils.

It seems that you are a victim of a foreclosed home and the bank has the right to have the home vacated with proper notification.  The Sheriff’s notification sounds like it was done properly, even though you are not in the country.  You may try contacting your landlord, or if possible the bank and explain your situation.  Perhaps they will give you some extra time.  If not, you should try to ask a friend or neighbor to assist you in removing your belongings.
