How do you know where to submit a claim if one policy ends at 12:01 AM & the claim happened while you were asleep? We had our sump pump stop working due to the power going out & we sustained quite a bit of water back up. Our previous policy stopped at 12:01 am & the new one started. Because we were asleep when it happened, we don't know where to submit the claim for damages because we don't know when the power went out.

If you had a house fire that erupted during the night and you were changing insurance at the expiration, you should start your claim with your existing insurance company.The fire department may be able to help you determine the time of the fire, but for the time being, contact the old insurance company regarding the fire. Have them start the claim. Since the policy is expiring, they may want to confirm the time of the fire, but without a specific time, they may have to accept the claim.You should also confirm that the expiration time is 12:01AM on the homeowner policy. In the past, homeowner or property policies expired at 12:01PM, since most fires do not start during the day. Auto policies expired at 12:01AM, since most drivers were not on the road at that time. Your insurance company maybe using the 12:01PM time, which would be a clearer scenario as to which insurance company is handling the claim.
