Why can my homeowners insurance cancel/non renewal with me in just a letter? I've been with Farm Bureau over 10 years NEVER filed a claim always paid my premium etc. Pretty low down and dirty.

Homeowner insurance companies are always reviewing the insurance policies they are writing. Even if you have been with them for many years, it is possible that the home is in need of updates or repairs. Also, with the continued catastrophic fires, hurricanes. tornados and flood, they may find the area that you are living in to be a high risk area now.

The insurance company will usually include a reason for the non-renewal in their letter. They must give you at least 60 days notice and they must wait until the renewal date to non-renew the insurance policy. If they did not give a reason, call them immediately and ask for the reason. If you can’t get an answer, keep going up the “chain” asking for a supervisor. If you still don’t get an answer, call the Dept of Insurance in your state and talk to them. They will get the reason for you. Once you know the reason, you can try to work it out with the insurance company or find another insurance company. You will have to let them know you were non-renewed, but if you have a valid solution you may be able to move your insurance quickly and easily. Not every insurance company uses the same underwriting criteria to write homeowner insurance so other companies may be of help.
