Insurance Question from Waynesville, NC

Asked on 02/03/2014

What can I do I have been denied a claim and feel it should be covered Dishwasher leaked apparently for while no water showed on kitchen floor I only discovered leak existed when I decided to replace dishwasher claims adjuster stated that policy didn't cover damage because it had been leaking for 1 or 2 months I asked how I would know I had the leak his reply was I guess you would have to have a professional come in and check appliance How often does one pay someone to come look under the dishwasher? Should I also invalid the bathtubs and have this professional lift them up and check for leaks? I am just so blown away by what the adjuster said any advice

Answer given on February 05, 2014

The homeowner insurance policy covers water damage to the home if it is “sudden and accidental”. If the dishwasher has been leaking for a period of time, the insurance company may deny the claim since it occurred over a period of time.Depending upon the type of damage you experienced, you may be able to appeal the denial of coverage and see if a supervisor will agree to pay for a portion of the damage. However, if there is mold, or wet rot, that damage may be denied. If there is simple water damage to the under flooring, you may be able to get the damage covered. Any covered damage will be subject to your deductible.Contact the insurance company and ask for a supervisor. Advise the damage you are trying to get covered and see if they will agree to pay the damages. If not, you really don’t have much recourse since the homeowner policy is pretty clear about water damage over a period of time.
