Insurance co. wants my authorization to obtain information about financials, tax, credit, heath, etc. Should I provide? I have a claim for stolen property from my car. My insurance company wants me to authorize credit bureaus, consumer reporting agencies, financial institutions, government agencies, fire department, insurance company representatives, utility companies, public and private employers, and employees of any of these to furnish information on salary, emplyment, mortgage recordes, tax returns, etc. Do I have to do this? How will it affect my claim one way or the other?

Insurance companies will sometimes request proof of one’s financial condition when adjusting a theft claim. While they are allowed to request information, you should make sure this request is not excessive. Talk to your insurance agent to see if they can help you determine why the adjuster feels they need so much information on you.The form that you were sent by the insurance company may have been a very generic form and they don’t really intend to contact so many agencies. It could be a form the company uses for theft claims as well as any bodily injury or medical claims. You should talk to the adjuster and have them clarify what information they really want so that you won’t feel your privacy is being violated. If the adjuster is unwilling to explain what they are looking for, then you may want to contact an attorney to assist you
