Overview

  • Although best known for auto insurance, Geico insurance options include home, life, motorcycle, pet, and other types of coverage
  • Geico insurance rates tend to be some of the lowest on the market, but that’s not the case for everyone
  • With high ratings from third-party companies and generally positive customer reviews, Geico is usually considered an excellent insurance provider

Whether you’re looking for the minimum amount of insurance required in your state or a full coverage auto insurance policy, Geico might have the cheapest rates. Geico, which stands for Government Employee Insurance Company, is one of the largest insurance providers in the country, and for good reason. With affordable rates and a long list of coverage options, Geico can cover almost anything you want to protect.

Although Geico insurance rates are usually low, that’s not always the case. For example, Geico auto insurance rates can be quite high for high-risk drivers. Additionally, Geico doesn’t write every policy it sells. Most policies — including life and home insurance — are underwritten by a separate company Geico partners with.

The only way to determine whether Geico is the best fit for you is to explore what it offers and compare it with other companies. Read through this Geico insurance review to learn what the company can do for you, then compare prices with as many companies as possible to find the best policy.

Geico Auto Insurance

No matter how much insurance coverage you need, Geico has a policy for you. Whether you want to keep costs as low as possible with minimum insurance or want to max your protection with full coverage, Geico sells the following types of car insurance:

  • Liability: Required in most states, liability insurance pays for damage and injuries you cause in an at-fault accident. Liability insurance never pays for your car repairs or medical expenses.
  • Collision: If you want help paying for car repairs after an accident, collision insurance has you covered. It also covers your car if you hit a stationary object, like a tree.
  • Comprehensive: Comprehensive insurance fixes your car after an unforeseen event damages it. Covered events include fire, floods, extreme weather, animal contact, theft, and vandalism.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: Although most states require drivers to have coverage, many American drivers go without insurance. If someone hits you without adequate coverage, uninsured motorist insurance will pay for your car repairs and medical bills.
  • Personal injury protection: Available in 20 states, personal injury protection (PIP) insurance pays for medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident. It also covers related expenses like funeral costs or lost wages.
  • Medical payments: Companies in the other 30 states offer medical payments (MedPay) insurance. MedPay works similarly to PIP insurance but doesn’t offer the exact same coverage.
Concerned about how much insurance you need? A Geico representative can help you sort through your options and coverage limits. They know exactly how much insurance your state requires and will ensure you can legally drive on public streets.

Dani Best Licensed Insurance Producer

Nearly every auto insurance company sells these basic insurance types, and many drivers never need to buy more. Geico tends to have affordable rates for both minimum and full coverage policies, so you’ll likely find low prices if you want a basic plan. Learn more in our Geico auto insurance review.

Geico Auto Insurance Add-ons

Geico might be one of the largest insurance companies in America, but its selection of customization choices for auto insurance is surprisingly small. If you’re interested in increasing the coverage in your policy, Geico offers four options:

  • Rideshare: Although rideshare companies often offer insurance to their drivers, there can be serious gaps in the coverage. Geico’s rideshare insurance coverage fills those gaps, protecting you better while working.
  • Roadside assistance: Use the Geico auto insurance mobile app to get help when you have a flat tire, dead battery, empty gas tank, or need a tow.
  • Mechanical breakdown: Mechanical breakdown insurance works similarly to a warranty. It covers unexpected repairs, excluding maintenance and normal wear-and-tear.
  • Rental car reimbursement: If your vehicle is stuck in the shop after a covered accident, Geico will pay for a rental vehicle.

It may not be the longest list of car insurance add-ons, but Geico’s options can add significant value to your policy. However, some add-ons commonly offered by other companies are missing from Geico’s list. For example, drivers looking for gap insurance will need to go elsewhere.

Geico Auto Insurance Rates

Geico might not have the longest list of coverage options, but it makes up for it with some of the lowest rates of any insurance company. If you’re looking for an affordable policy that covers your basic needs, Geico might be your best bet. Check out Geico’s average rates for a minimum insurance policy below.

For drivers looking for more protection for their cars, Geico offers affordable full coverage policies as well. Unlike minimum insurance, which has different coverage requirements based on where you live, full coverage includes liability, comprehensive, and collision insurance. It also often includes uninsured motorist and PIP or MedPay coverage.

As you can see, Geico auto insurance rates are usually affordable no matter how old you are. The one exception to Geico’s low average rates is for high-risk drivers. If you have a DUI, multiple speeding tickets, or at-fault accidents, you should consider it as the best car insurance company for high-risk car insurance.

Geico Auto Insurance Discounts

Geico auto insurance quotes are often one of your cheapest coverage options, partly because Geico offers so many discounts. When you purchase a Geico auto insurance policy, you might be eligible for the following savings:

  • Policy bundling: As you’ll see below, Geico sells a variety of coverage. You can save on your policy by buying more than one type of coverage from Geico.
  • Multi-vehicle: Households with multiple vehicles can save on their insurance by adding each car to one policy. Learn more about multi vehicle car insurance discounts.
  • Safety equipment: You’ll earn a small discount by always wearing your seat belt while driving. Other safety features that save money include anti-lock brakes and air bags.
  • New car: Cars that are three years old or younger may be eligible for 15% savings.
  • Anti-theft devices: Having anti-theft devices in your car, like audible alarms and GPS tracking, can earn you
  • DriveEasy: DriveEasy is Geico’s telematics auto insurance program that tracks your driving habits through a mobile app. Safe drivers can save up to 10% on their insurance with DriveEasy.
  • Defensive driving education: You’ll earn a discount if you pass a Geico-approved defensive driving course. Make sure to check with a representative to see if you qualify.
  • Good student: Full-time students under 25 can save up to 15% on their insurance by maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better.
  • Driver education: Drivers under the age of 21 can save on their insurance by completing a driver’s education course.
  • Good driver: Drivers who go at least five years without causing an accident or getting a traffic violation can save up to 22% on their insurance with this good driver discount.
  • Federal employment: Geico started by selling affordable insurance to government employees, and it continues that goal today. Eligible active and retired government workers can save with Geico.
  • Emergency deployment: If you’re called away on emergency deployment to an imminent danger zone, Geico will reduce your insurance rates so you don’t have to worry about your policy lapsing.
  • Affiliation: Geico partners with a variety of organizations and employers to offer discounted rates to their members. A Geico representative can check if you belong to a qualifying organization.
  • Military: Active and retired members of the military, Reserves, and National Guard can save on their Geico auto insurance with military car insurance discounts.

Geico offers enough ways to save that just about anyone can find low-cost car insurance with driver discounts. While most discounts apply directly to your account when you purchase a policy, some require additional proof.

Geico Home Insurance

Although Geico advertises a variety of policies besides auto insurance, it doesn’t write very many of them. That’s true of Geico homeowners insurance because they partner with several providers to offer affordable home coverage to their customers.

If you want to purchase Geico home insurance coverage, you won’t get to pick which company writes the policy. No matter who writes the policy, you’ll have access to the same basic home insurance options, which include:

  • Dwelling and other structures: This portion of your home insurance policy protects the physical structure of your house and freestanding structures like pools and fences.
  • Personal property: Home insurance doesn’t cover just the structure of your house. It also pays to replace your personal property, like appliances, furniture, and even clothes.
  • Additional living expenses: If your home becomes unlivable after covered damage, your policy will pay for living expenses like hotel rooms while you wait for repairs.
  • Medical coverage and liability protection: You might be liable for injuries caused to another person on your property. This portion of your policy pays for the injured party’s health care expenses and your legal fees.
Although home insurance is never required by law, it’s usually worth buying. With the risks of floods, hurricanes, and other extreme weather, home insurance can save you thousands of dollars and even prevent you from losing your home.

Diego Anderson Licensed Real Estate Agent

A basic home insurance policy from Geico protects your house from a variety of damage, but there are gaps in the coverage. For example, most policies don’t cover damage from natural events like floods and earthquakes. If you want to fill those gaps, you’ll need to purchase add-ons.

Understanding your home insurance can be tricky, especially if you’ve never dealt with it before. However, you don’t have to figure it out yourself — a Geico representative can tell you what you need to know about your home insurance policy.

Geico Home Insurance Add-ons

Since Geico doesn’t write its own home insurance policies, the specific add-ons you can purchase depend on which company manages your policy. However, most companies offer similar home insurance add-ons. You’ll likely get to choose from the following home insurance add-ons:

  • Floods: Although flood coverage is especially recommended for Americans living in floodplains, every home in the country is at risk of flood damage.
  • Earthquake: This add-on will repair and even outright replace your home if it’s damaged by an earthquake, offering valuable protection for people living near fault lines.
  • Hurricanes: With tropical storms seeming to grow in intensity, hurricane coverage can save you hundreds of thousands of dollars, especially if you live on the East Coast.
  • Personal property: Home insurance automatically comes with personal property coverage, but you can purchase extra coverage if you have valuable belongings like sports or music equipment.
  • Jewelry: Many companies offer extra coverage for expensive jewelry beyond personal property insurance. Depending on the provider, you may need to complete a jewelry evaluation before your policy starts.
  • Water backup and sump pump overflow: While a standard policy covers some water damage, you’ll need extra coverage if a sewer or drain backup floods your home.
  • Identity fraud: Many companies will pay for your legal and restoration fees if someone steals your identity or you’re the victim of credit card theft.

Adding every available add-on to your policy might be tempting, but you should only purchase what you need. Geico promises affordable prices, but adding unnecessary coverage to your policy will dramatically increase your rates.

Geico Home Insurance Discounts

The discounts available to you depend on which company writes your policy, but Geico promises at least three ways to save. These apply to both home and renters insurance and include:

  • Bundle other Geico policies
  • Military and government employees
  • Home safety features

Like its auto policies, most home insurance discounts will apply automatically to your account. If you want to double-check that you’re getting every possible savings, a Geico home insurance customer service representative can help.

Other Types of Insurance by Geico

Aside from its most popular policies, Geico also offers a long list of insurance options to cover nearly everything important in your life. Policies include:

  • Motorcycle, ATV, and off-road vehicles coverage
  • Life insurance
  • Mexico car insurance
  • RV insurance
  • Boats and watercraft coverage
  • Collector car insurance
  • Condo and mobile home insurance
  • Renters coverage
  • Landlord policies
  • Business insurance
  • Pet insurance
  • Travel and overseas insurance
  • Event coverage
  • Jewelry insurance

Keep in mind that other companies underwrite most coverage options listed above, and you won’t get to choose who Geico sends you to.

While buying multiple policies from the same company has advantages, comparing quotes with Geico is more difficult. Since you have no choice where Geico sends you, you won't know know what your coverage options are until after you've requested a quote.

Geico Ratings and Reviews

As one of the largest names in car insurance, it should come as no surprise that Geico gets relatively good ratings from most third-party companies and customers.

For example, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) rates companies on the number of complaints they receive compared to their size. The national average score is 1.0, with higher numbers meaning the company gets more complaints.

Geico scores 1.23, which means it gets slightly more complaints than the national average. Compare that with Allstate’s 2.70 and Progressive’s 1.45, and it’s not that bad of a score.

Another third-party company to look at is A.M. Best, which rates providers on their financial strength. Financial strength is important for any potential insurer because it lets you know how likely it is to pay future claims.

As for Geico company reviews from actual customers, the consensus is mixed. Many reviews posted online are negative, focusing on a slow claims process, poor customer service, and unexpected policy cancellations.

However, many customers leave positive ratings when they have nothing to say. For example, the average rating in the Geico auto insurance review is 4.11 out of 5 stars.

Find Geico Insurance Quotes Today

As one of the most recognizable names in auto insurance, Geico is usually a safe bet to purchase a policy from because it’s usually one of the cheapest options. Since there are Geico insurance options to cover just about anything you want to protect, it’s an easy one-stop shop for convenient coverage.

However, you should never sign up with the first company you consider. Geico insurance rates may be some of the cheapest, but you might find better rates elsewhere. To ensure you get the best possible prices, compare rates with as many companies as possible.

GEICO is unpredictable and arbitrary. You\'d need insurance for this insurance, since GEICO is unable or unwilling to provide the most important function of insurance: certainty. They cancelled my new auto insurance for no reason other than their own incompetence. Long story short: I paid the policy in full. While on a vacation with my family, I opened GEICO app and was surprised to find that my policy is scheduled to be cancelled. When I came back home I found a letter saying that I have eight days from the 5th of October to send them documents (only accepted by postal mail, even though every document was a copy) or my insurance would be cancelled. In fact the letter was delivered *about 8 days after the 5th of October* (again, delivered while I was not home). At no earlier point had I been informed that these documents were required, and GEICO made no attempt to contact me by phone call, text message or Email. In fact, had I not checked the app and stayed on vacation for longer, I might have ended up driving without insurance unwittingly. I called GEICO multiple times. They consistently assured me that if I sent the correct documents before the fast-approaching cancellation date, my policy would continue. So I sent all the documents they requested by priority mail. In spite of the supposed urgency they were attempting to convey, it took them six days after receiving the documents to start reviewing them (with no way to contact the underwriting department or confirm that they had recieved them). It took five more days for the final review because of their own confusion about what was clearly included in the documents I\'d sent them. Two days before the deadline, I find out by calling them (without any notification on their part) that, in fact, my policy will be cancelled. The reason is that I had no prior insurance, which they claimed was contrary to my statements. This is 100% false and can be refuted by recorded calls to customer service in which I stated that GEICO was my first insurance, and by the fact that they don\'t have the name of my previous insurance company and the coverage limits (required information when you register online if you state that you\'ve been insured). GEICO had zero interest in checking the evidence or compensating me, and there was no way to appeal. Price I have to pay for GEICO\'s incompetence: Having to find new insurance in two days (which was hard in the first place since I have no driving record in the US), possibly higher rates because of the cancellation on my record. If it happened to me, it must have happened to thousands of other customers in the country, as confirmed by a large fraction of GEICO\'S customer reviews online. So the chance that it will happen to you is non-negligible.

About a year ago I canceled my policy ceasing any dealings with Geico. I paid the premiums in full and closed my account. Throughout the year, I've been a happy StateFarm customer. Several weeks ago, Geico unilaterally opened my policy forcing me to pay premiums for the following 6 months. Understanding that it could be a mistake, I contacted them 3 times. I talked to 6 different people. All of them promised to help me. I wrote 2 emails attaching copies of my StateFarm Id's for the entire period (after Geico policy cancellation). It didn't cure the problem. Moreover, Geico retroactively and unilaterally (without my desire, knowledge, and consent) reopened the policy. Now, they force me to pay for the previous months (last year). Geico supervisor [REDACTED NAME] claims that he obtains sufficient evidence that I hadn't been insured after I officially broke with Geico in April-May 2020 = the company is right demanding me to pay for nothing. From my non-legal understanding, it's a fraud, He knowingly (I sent them StateFarm Id's for the entire period) mispresents the facts unlawfully demanding payment.

They waited 60 days and then doubled my rate. they never notified me. When I looked it up they said it was due to the agent putting it in as a sports bus, and since I am using it for sales my rate is double. yes on their letter they sent me it shows right on it that the old use is class "C" and the new use is class "C". The reviews on geicos website are fake. real reviews are much more negative. They lie in their commercials about saving money so why would I not expect them to lie about the rate they are giving me. I am no risk adjuster but any halfway intelligent person knows their is a lot more risk for a bus full of athletes that ways 20,000 pounds than a minivan with one person in it. Yet according to geico insuring a moving tank is cheaper than insuring a minivan. Would you believe that? I am not that gullible. Bait and switch all the way.

Geico is amazing

My experience receiving auto insurance from Geico has been extremely positive. The insurance process was perfectly smooth and I have all my insurance information neatly organized at the tip of my fingers on my mobile phone. The coverage and premiums are much better than I received from my previous provider.
