Insurance Question from Bellview, FL

Asked on 02/18/2011

Can my insurance cancel me for vehicles in my backyard if they are behind a locked fence? My son has 3 vehicles that he is going to restore in my back yard. My insurance company sent me a cancellation letter stating they were cancelling due to unacceptable risk or exposure ***condition of premises and/or structure. Can they force me to move the vehicles or me risk cancellation. I have review all of my policy and can only find reference to animals or pools not vehicles or structures.

While I have never heard of a policy being cancelled for this situation, insurance companies are allowed to cancel a policy if they feel the condition of the premises is unacceptable.  the cars may appear to be in such bad condition that they represent a hazard to the property including possible fire or some sort of negative effect on the home.

You should contact your agent or company and explain that the cars in the yard are intended for restoration.  It is most likely that because of the number of cars it raises a red flag to the insurance company.  You should ask the company if there is a way to keep all three of the cars in the yard if you cover them or make them look more acceptable or if you were to move one or two of the cars would they be willing to reinstate the insurance. You should also make sure that you are not in violation of any zoning laws in the area regarding the number of cars.  It is possible the city does not allow these cars either and the insurance company would then maintain the non renewal based on that.
