Insurance Question from Troy, MI

Asked on 09/06/2011

Can anyone help us with an insurance issue with a car rental company? Can anyone help us with an insurance issue with a car rental company? We were promised full insurance coverage on all drivers but when an accident happened (our driver's fault), they changed their mind and decided not to cover the damages. We are waiting a call from the claim manager but thought it would be wise to seek professional advice in the meanwhile.

Most rental car companies have a contract that you sign when you rent a car. Included in the contract is a list of drivers who will be using the car, and they are usually the only covered drivers in the event of a loss. There is also, usually, a surcharge for underaged drivers (under 21) and sometimes a surcharge for older drivers. You are also asked to sign if you want the rental car company to cover damages to the car, or if you will be insuring it on your own (or under your car insurance). You should review the contract you have to see if there are any exclusions that may apply to the driver of the car. If not, you need to ask the claim representative or adjuster to explain why they are denying coverage in this instance. If you are still unsatisfied with the explanation, you should contact your insurance agent or company to see how they might cover the rental car in this incident.
