The purpose of an SR22 is to provide proof that you have automobile liability coverage on your vehicle. If you cancel your current auto policy, they will notify the DMV that their policy has been cancelled. You will then need to have your new insurance company file a new SR22 with the Department of Motor Vehicles.  This should be a simple transaction, presuming you are not trying to hide a traffic ticket from your new insurance company.  The cost of an SR22 should be the same with the new insurance company as it was with the old insurance company. However, you may want to contact the new company and make sure they understand an SR22 is required on your insurance policy.

If they are not willing to provide the filing, then you should stay with your current insurance company or shop around with other insurance companies and include the cost of the SR22.
