What would I need to do if I want to run an online business and I’m currently renting a room in a house?

Hi.

I was thinking of starting a small online store selling arts and crafts, selling on eBay.com and etsy.com. I am living in Lancaster, California. I understand I would need to obtain a business license with the city. If I were to open a mailbox with either USPS or UPS, can I use those mailbox addresses as my business address since I will be shipping products and receiving materials via those outlets.

Thank you for your time

Best Regards,

Hai

This is not a general legal question, but rather depends on the rules your city has put in place for the license. If you can apply for a license with a P.O. box, etc., then you can--there is no general law stopping you. If the city's ordinances require you to use a physical address for the license, then use the address of your rental room as the application address, but use the P.O. box as your mailing address--there is no requirement that you have the same mailing address as the addresss used for business registration purposes.
