When should an employee receive their last paycheck?

My friend was fired today she was told by her employer that she had 2 checks that she would be receiving for the time that she has worked but that she has to wait until regular paychecks in order to get them. I was always under the impression that if you were fired, they had to pay you all monies due at the time that you are separating from the company, is that true or not?

In CA, if a worker is fired or laid off, they are entitled to their final paycheck at the time of their separation; in other words they should be paid immediately. The employer may not wait until the next scheduled payday to pay the employee. Additionally, their final paycheck must include all accrued, unused vacation time or PTO.
