If my mom lost her job of 8 years because she had back surgery and is unable to lift 50 lbs for at least 6 months, is there anything that we can do?

Based upon what you have written it seems that your mother needs to consult the department of labor and see if she is eligible to make a claim for disability on a permanent basis. Assuming she is deemed permanently disabled she will be entitled to monthly disability payments.
