Is it legal if my employer has stated that if an employee does not attend the company convention, then they will not be paid for the 1 1/2 days that the company will be closed?

However, if we attend the convention we will be paid for the day.

Does this mandate violate company policy or the terms of an employment contract or union agreement? Does it constitute actionable discrimination? If the answer to tall of that is "no", then it is legal. The fact is that in an "at will" employment relationship an employer can set the terms and conditions of employment much as it sees fit. This includes when and why an employee is paid. Therefore, not paying an employee for a day off is legal, as is paying an employee for attendance at a company event.
