Is my employer allowed to give me the work of the departed executive director on top of my own and not compensate me for it?

I’m an at-will middle-management employee in California. Our CEO left 6 months ago and instead of replacing him the board has given me all his work on top of my already full-time work load. They will not allow me to work overtime and they are not paying me any more than they already were. They show no signs of moving to replace the director. Do I have any recourse?

A company can set the terms of a worker's employment much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). Therefore, unless you have protection against this treatment under the terms of an employment contract or union agreement you have no claim here. Unfortuntely your choices are to continue with your heavy workload, refuse to do it or complain about it but risk termination, or quit.
