Is alimony still required if a legal separation is being now changed to an actual divorce?

My boyfriend broke up with his wife last year and filed his own divorce papers. Apparently when she signed them she only agreed to a legal separation. Regardless he has been paying for the home they had rented last year since his name is on the lease for the next 2 months. If he is now trying to finalize the divorce will he still have to pay alimony to her? They were married barely a year and he has been paying towards rent and pain suffering or something. Also, is there a certain amount of time before he can remarry?
