If you buy a house from someone that bought it at a tax sale, what are your protections from any claims made against the property down the line?

We want to buy a house but the man bought house from a tax sale. What I want to know is will we own it, or can someone with the deed take it from us, or can we get a deed?

Good question. If you are thinking about buying a home from a person who directly acquired it at a tax sale, you should consult with a real estate attorney about it before you sign any agreement to purchase.

The reason is that the person who lost the property at the tax sale typically has up to a year to redeem the purchase price and get back the property from the person that directly bought it at the tax sale.

You do not want to have a situation that you end up losing the home through the redemption by the prior owner or worse yet, lose the home and are out of pocket money because your purchase price from the current onwer exceeds what he or she bought the property for at the auction.
