What can I do if I was fired from a job 4 months ago and realized a couple of days later that I still had items in one of the work areas that I no longer had access to?

I asked my ex-boss about getting the items back but never got a clear answer. Another former co-worker explained that the area where my items were had been cleaned out by my ex-boss but she is not sure if my items were kept and moved with the other items or if they were thrown out/donated by my ex-boss. How can I make sure she hands over my items or compensates me for the items if she threw them out/donated them? The items are valued at about $250.

The only way to get the items back and/or get compensation for them would be to sue your employer: if you can show, such as through credible (believeable) testimony that you owed certain items and they were either intentionally or carelessly disposed of by the employer, you can get a judgment from the court for the provable value of those items, requiring  the employer to pay for them. For around $250 worth of value, suing in small claims court, acting as your own attorney, is a good option. You should probably name both the company and your boss herself as defendants.
