How much time must expire before a child is not liable for the money a parent givesthemif the parent is in a nursing home?

Both father and mother are in a nursing home. It is costing about $7000 a month. They want to give some money to their children before the nursing home takes it all. They will run out of money in about 4 years. They have a living trust and my brother has POA.
