There is really no hard and fast rule.  It depends on the size of the estate and the work involved such as noticing creditors, marshaling assets. etc.  Generally an estate tax return has to be filed within 9 months of death but selling assets and distributing assets can take a long time.  You can ask for an informal accounting and if it has been very long then maybe speak with a lawyer yourself and have him or her write a letter asking for status. Good luck.
