Do I have to pay an agent his percentage if he did nothing except put a for sale sign in the yard?

My agent did nothing except put a for
sale sign in the yard. He didn’t make
any calls or show the property. His
contact ended November 2017. And the
property just sold this month.

If the property sold to someone who had seen the property while the contract was unexpired, then you'd have to pay the realtor: whether or she or he did a lot of work or a little, the standard realtor agreement requires payment if a buyer is found during the realtor's agency. If the buyer saw the house after the contract expired, you do not have to pay.
