What is the law on surveillance cameras and privacy regarding a rental?

Living with a subtenant in a home. They rent a room. Tenant has become very aggressive at time and has made numerous threats. Cameras were installed in the home facing the entry ways to ensure safety and security (installed in common areas not tenant’s rented room). A 30 day notice was given to the subtenant but they are now threatening a civil privacy breach law suit. Are these cameras a breach of their privacy even though they are located in common areas that everyone can use? Do they have a civil case?
