What can happen if I put money in at a self-check out and it gave me more than what I should have gotten back?

I then left the store. Can they pursue charges against me? I did not tamper with the machine but did do this more than once. I recieved $450 more than I should have all together.

Yes, they can press charges against you, since taking money which you know did not belong to you is theft--what you did is no different legally than if you saw $450 sitting in an open cash drawer in a register and took it. They can also sue you to recover the money and possibly their lawyer or court fees, too.
