Can I receive disciplinary action if I fail to meet with my manger during a time that I am not scheduled to work?

My company has 12 hour shifts; I work the night shift 7 pm – 7 am. My manager emailed me that she needed to meet with me. I let her know that I would have to check my schedule. She then told me that we could do a conference call if needed because she leaves at 5:30 pm. That same day she emailed demanding that I give her a time I could come meet with her before a certain date and during a certain timeframe 9:00 am – 4:30 pm. I am a student and I made her aware that I have other obligations when I complete my obligated shift with the company. She’s still demanding that I come in when I am not scheduled for work to meet with her.

Unless you have a union agreement or employment contract, you are an "at will" worker. This means that you can be disciplined (up to and including suspension or even termination) for any reason or nor reason at all, with or without notice. The fact is that a company can set the conditions of the workplace much as it sees fit (absent some form of legally actionable discrimination). This includes having an employee come in for a meeting on their time off. Note, however, if you are paid hourly then you must be compensated for any time that you attend such a meeting.
