Can I legally put a utility in my name if my name is not listed on the lease?

My utility is threatening to disconnect service, calling this some sort of fraud. The people listed on my lease owe an outstanding bill with the utility company, but do not reside in the residence. They are threatening to disconnect my service even though my account is current.

Generally speaking, the utility wants to see that you have a legal obligation that relates to the place and a lease is evidence of such an obligation.  That is why they generally ask you to bring a copy of a lease down to open the account.  Or they want the landlord to verify the occupancy.  Since the utility is in the other people's name and they owe money they are sticking it to you.  Call the Public Utility Commission and speak with some one.  Good luck.
