Can H1B help a friend for a startup

I am on H1B visa. My friend is starting a business. Can I help him? I am not
planning to get any form of compensation. The help is likely advice for his
marketing materials, to give him some feedback/opinions, making international
phone calls since I know the language.

Yes, you can help in any type of way that is not considered work for which you'd be expecting to get compensated . You can give suggestions and advice but cannot receive any payment for your services.  You have to be very careful not to overstep the boundaries of what is permissible so that you do not jeopardize your own H-1B status.
