Can an employer require a part time employee to work more hours than the employee is scheduled to work?

A co-worker of mine was recently threatened with disciplinary action if she did not work more than 8 hours when she was scheduled to work 6 hours that day. This was in a grocery store that is covered by a UFCW contract.

If their scheduling violates the terms of the union contract (or any exisiting employment agreement), then your co-worker has a claim. Otherwise, absent some form of legally actionable discrimination, your company can set the conditions of work much as it sees fit. This includes having a part-time employee work more hours then they are scheduled for.
