Can a business charge you a fee for initiating a chargeback on your credit card?

I simply want to return a defective product but this company refuses to accept returns. I initiated a chargeback through my card and the company. I am simply trying to return the item but just was sent a $50 invoice for a chargeback fee.

Legally, they can only do this if the chargeback was unjustified or unsupported--i.e. not due to, for example, the company shipping a defective product and refusing to take a return or ship a replacement. Since that is what seems to have occured here--the chargebook seems justified by the company's actions--you should have grounds to dispute the chargeback, too with your credit card company.
