In an at will employment relationship, a company can set the conditions of employment much as it sees fit. This includes who to fire, when, how and why. So, for example, an employee can be fired for any reason or nor reason at all, with or without notice, in person, my mail or on the phone. This is true so long as such action does not violate company policy or the terms of a union agreement or employment contract. Also, the employee's treatment must not constitute some form of legally actionable discrimination.
