Your employer is not required to do anything: the employer is not the police and does not enforce the criminal laws. (If you feel it was a legitimate threat, you should be contacting the police.)
That said, they *can* do something--transfer, suspend, terminate, etc. the coworker--if they wanted; they have that authority, even though they don't have the obligation to this. The fact, however, that they could take action means that if you inform your employer and they do nothing, and the threat is acted upon and you are hurt, you could at that point potentially sue the employer for "negligent supervision"--for not taking steps to prevent harm. Having knowledge of a threat does not compel them to act, but does potentially make them liable for the consequences if they fail to do anything. 
But again: for credible threats, you go to the police. That's what they are there for.
