What to do if a maintenance man in my apartment complex messed with our gas line so that we were getting gas illegally without our knowledge?

We had the gas shut off yesterday without notice because of what the maintenance man did. Apparently, now we are without heat in the middle of winter. We only got down to the conclusion that the maintenance man had done something after a long back and forth with apartment managers and the gas company, but the gas company said that our gas will remain off for a few more days while they conduct an investigation. One full day without heat and hot water constitutes as an “emergency” here, and in my opinion 3 or 4 this month, is unacceptable. Can we be compensated for our inconveniences?

Based upon what you have written, the maintenance man who is an agent of your landlord seemingly caused a problem resulting in you getting penalized. As such, your landlord should reduce a portion of your rent for the following month as a result of the inconvenience.
