Once a bankruptcy is file an "automatic stay" is issued.  This effectively stops any and all collection efforts on the part of the debtor's creditors.  If a garnishment was in place it must cease and no new collection activity may be brought against the debtor.  However, certain creditors may apply for a relief from the stay if the show just cause.  For example, a secured creditor such a a mortgagee.

At this point you should consult with a bankrutcpy attorney in your area.
