Will a misdemeanor DUI drug conviction in 1 state prevent me from buying a gun in another state in where I now reside?

Question Details:

In 01/08, I got a DUI (marijuana) in IL and was wondering if that would affect my purchase of a pistol in KY where I am currently a resident. I no longer use drugs or alcohol. The only other things on my record are speeding tickets and the like. Can you help me out?

Not sure why you are asking this question and setting forth that you are in Ohio. But we can try to answer your inquiry anyway. Please keep in mind that Drunk Driving laws, and the relevant laws that may set forth the disability to carry firearms for a conviction of impaired driving, differ widely from state to state.

In your particular instance, you should look into the laws of the state of Kentucky to find out if a DUI, where the impairment was a result of drugs, will disable a person such as yourself from being able to purchase or own a firearm.

If you are in Ohio, on the otherhand, you may wish to further explore drunk driving related laws of Ohio at http://www.bustedfordrunkdriving.com to better inform yourself with Ohio's laws.

Good luck.
