Who is responsible for paying for a broken window, the landlord or tenant?

Question Details:

I am renting in California and I don't see anything specific about this in my lease. When I came home on Halloween night my front living room window had been broken. Who is responsible for fixing and paying for this?

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  The landlord is required to make a repair of this nature.  I f the landlord believes that the window broke as a result of your fault it may deduct the cost to fix the window from your security deposit.  However, since this was basis vandalism, the landlord should pay to have this fixed without passing the cost on to you as you were clearly not at fault for this damage.
