What should I expect in court for second shoplifting offense?

Question Details:

I was caught shoplifting and taken to jail; it was my second offense. Bailed out that night. Have court date in two days. So far I have completed a shoplifter's alternative course. I have seen no report. What should I do other than go to court that day?

You have stated that you have completed a "shoplifter's alternative course", presumably to resolve your first shoplifting charge.  While many states have these types of diversionary programs, they are usually only available to first time offenders.  Therefore, you are probably going to need to defend this new charge on the merits.  Although this is not the "crime of the century", it is clear that the penalties will get more serious as you repeat the offense.  Therefore, in response to your question, you should try to obtain an attorney prior to your court date.  If you cannot get one before your court date, you should request time to obtain one when you go to court, and then do everything possible to get an attorney between then and your next court date.  Good luck.
