Real Estate Law Answers

I am a lawyer in CT and practice in this area of the law.  There is no law that limits the amount of rent that can be charges.  Rather, the amount of rent is governed by the market area.  if the market values are increasing and there is a lot of demand for the place you live then the landlord may increase the rent to where he believes is the going rate.  if the landlord increases your rate so you cannot afford to live there based on a discriminatory pretext, then you may have a valid claim against the landlord.  I think that rent increase is very high and I therefore, suggest that you meet with a lawyer to discuss whether there is a claim for discrimination.
