What is an owner's liability for an unauthorized driver's car accident?

Question Details:

What is an owner's liability for car accident that occurs when someone else is using the car? My parents let me use their car for a few days. On one of those days I gave my daughter permission (without my parents knowledge) to use the car to go to work. I was ill that day and was not able to drive her because of Medication. Unfortunately on her way home she struck and killed a pedestrian. She was not issued any tickets and it was acknowledged as an accident due to circumstances involving the pedestrian.

In this situation permission to use the car would most likely be "implied". Your parents gave you permission to use the car, you then gave your daughter permission. Although your parents did not expressly give permission to their granddaughter to drive the car, it would be difficult now for your parents to argue that they did not give permission under these facts. It's possible to argue that they did not give permission, but, in my opinion that arguement will not be successful because permission can be construed as implied.
