Question Details: I just received a check in the mail from my homeowners insurance company on a claim I didn't make. Accompanying this was a form that listed all the supposed stolen assets, that I know were not stolen and some even completely made up. It is my ex's and my name on the policy and he made a claim without informing me and the insurance sent me the check. I don't want to be a part of any kind of fraud. What is the best way to report it without him knowing it was me if at all possible? I don't want any vengeance being sought! And am I liable for knowing and not reporting since my name is on the policy?
You might indeed be liable, since it is your name on the policy as well. At the very least, if the fraud is discovered, it will likely be assumed you are part of it and you'll then be in the position of having to clear your name.
You need to report this fraud, and you should report it to the insurance company and very possibly the police as well (the insurer may report it to the police if you don't). If you're worried about retaliation, you need to speak with the police, share your fears with them, possibly get a restraining order, etc.

Are you a lawyer?
