What can I do when my ex-boss refuses to write a letter stating I'm unemployed as of Oct. 23 until I pay back the money I owe him?

Question Details: I need to file for unemployment but my ex-boss refuses to write the letter stating the fact I'm unemployed as of Oct. 23 until I pay back the personal loan he gave me. I paid back most of it and then he said to forget about the rest. I wrote out an agreement with him but the "amendment" was not in writing. I have a text message on my phone informing me I had been let go. I also have the text message about the refusal. What can I do?

I would contact the Texas labor department and make a complaint against your ex-boss. The fact that he refuses to verify your unemployment until you pay back a personal loan is close to blackmail. If you are in fact no longer working for him, he is legally obligated to verify that with unemployment so that you can file as soon as possible. He is also interfering with your ability to get unemployment benefits.  Here is the Texas website: http://www.twc.state.tx.us/.
